Is individual dental insurance a better value than a dental discount plan?

Is personal or family dental insurance a better value than a dental discount plan?
Dental insurance contracts are often a good value when acquired through group insurance contracts but not so on individual stand alone dental plans. For this reason, the long waiting periods often found on individual dental plans and the high cost of standalone dental insurance, discount dental plans are often more advantageous for those who cannot acquire their dental insurance through an employer.

There is a big difference between standalone dental insurance plans and dental insurance that is bought as a package with an individual health insurance policy. Insurance companies usually have better loss ratios when dental insurance is packaged with individual or personal health care insurance policies. This fact often makes this an affordable way to make dental care affordable.

Getting a group discount is not the only thing that makes employer-sponsored dental insurance a better deal than standalone individual or personal dental insurance. Usually people think that the buying power is the big reason for the difference in cost, the main reason is based on something called adverse selection. When an insurance company insures a large group of people at one company they tend to get a their fair share of of insured people who will never use the policy at all. When policies are sold to individuals, they will disproportionately get policyholders who will use the insurance in a significant way.

Since so many people fail to shop around, the insurance companies continue to offer these plans even though they are usually over-priced and offer little value. Consumers are getting more sophisticated. We are doing a lot or research online and may stop buying these plans at some point in the future.

Another reason that individual dental insurance plans usually are a bad value when stacked up against discount dental plans is that there is quite frequently a lengthy wait before you may use your policy fully. You may need to wait two or three years before something expensive like a root canal is covered with an individual or personal dental insurance policy.

Even worse than the elimination period itself is the policyholders’ lack of knowledge of the waiting period. Since this information is hidden in the fine print, many consumers are unaware of the elimination period until they submit a claim.

Quite frequently a dental discount plan will offer its discounts right away or nearly right away so. You may need to wait until the beginning of the following month, but no more. This offers you a big advantage over most standalone individual dental insurance contracts.

Although dental insurance may offer more benefits than a discount dental plan, you will probably overpay for those additional benefits if you purchase an standalone policy. A dental discount plan is very inexpensive. The yearly cost is often equal to two monthly premiums for a dental insurance policy.

It pays to shop around and be aware of all your alternatives when it comes to dental insurance and dental discount plans. Although group dental and dental insurance bought as a rider on a health care insurance policy can be a good value, discount dental plans will have major advantages over individually bought standalone dental insurance.

10 Teeth Whitening Facts

Tooth whitening is an increasingly popular procedure with people consulting a cosmetic dentist.  There has been some interesting growth among male patients, especially since contemporary social mores are more liberal about men putting effort into maintaining their appearance.  There are also other people who try to whiten their teeth themselves, rather than going to see their local dentist.  Here are some things you should know if you are interesting in bleaching or whitening your teeth.

1.    Certain habits like smoking or imbibing caffeinated drinks can stain your teeth.  Remember them if you are planning to take a preventative approach.
2.    You may have difficulty finding a dental insurance plan that covers tooth whitening.
3.    The type or tint of your discoloration matters, because darkening of teeth is not simply a matter of different gradations of the same shade.  For example, some teeth turn yellowish, while others turn grayish.  It is generally easier to lighten yellowish teeth, in comparison to grayish teeth.
4.    Whiteners tend to react differently with different materials.  Yes, this sounds like common sense, something people do not need to be told.  However, not all patients realize the implications for sets of teeth that are not entirely “real.”  If you have fillings, veneers or other similar augmentations, they will not look the same after bleaching as your natural enamel will.
5.    Tell your cosmetic dentist about any cavities you have, or ask him or her to examine your teeth for cavities.  You should get any necessary filings done before you start the whitening procedure.
6.    You might also have a “regular” professional cleaning done first, before you get the whitening procedure.
7.    People will gum diseases like gingivitis or periodontitis should not have their teeth bleached.  Then again, it must be remembered that a mild gum disease like gingivitis can be fixed with better personal dental care, so gum problems should not make you despair of ever having your teeth whitened.
8.    Professional tooth whitening is not often a one-time deal.  Your teeth are likely to start turning darker again eventually, and you might want to go back for another treatment.  Even so, you should try to avoid having to go back so soon.  Cut down on habits or foods that might cause your teeth to become darker.  Overly frequent treatments are not good for your teeth and gums.
9.    It is normal to experience some side effects immediately following the whitening of your teeth.  The most frequent ones are tooth sensitivity and irritation of the gums.  You are likely to experience these for a while, no matter how skilled your cosmetic dentist is.
10.      Some people try to whiten their own teeth with kits purchased from their own pharmacy.  However, it is usually more effective to go see your local dentist.  Needless to say, a dental professional will probably be able to do a more technically proficient job.  In addition, a dentist like has access to stronger whitening agents than the kind you can buy in a pharmacy.  When you get professional whitening, you pay for professional treatment and professional agents.  You should be critical and realistic about products that advertise similar results to what you can get from a dentist.

How to Choose a Good Dentist

Though some patients find dentists’ officesuniformly intimidating, it must be emphasized that not all dentists are alike. Some are much better practitioners of dentistry than others. However, how can you learn to spot the best ones, without having to become an expert in dentistry yourself? Here are some tips about finding a good dentist.

1) Does the dentist take a holistic approach to your initial examinations? Dentistry is about more than your teeth and gums. The doctor should also take a look at the makeup of your face and neck, and should take a look at your lymph nodes. Cosmetic dentistry, or even “basic” dental operations can have serious implications if you have a special lymph condition, or if the dentist accidentally disrupts the lymph system in the course of a procedure.

2) See what kind of procedures he or she focuses on in the promotions materials. If the emphasis is only on cosmetic dentistry, you should probably be concerned. This person might be more concerned with fads than fundamentals—or even safety. Cosmetic dentistry is perfectly legitimate if done properly, but an overemphasis on it might mean an unbalanced approach to being a dentist.

3) What does he or she say when you mention going to ask for a second opinion? If the dentist has confidence in his or her skills, he or she should not be upset that you are asking for external confirmation, particularly if you are considering a major operation.

4) Evaluate the way the dentist works after the most essential parts of the procedure are done. For instance, does the dentist polish your teeth or take care to see that no bits of chemicals, filling or enamel are left cluttering up your mouth like sawdust? These types of post-procedural clean-up are dentistry’s equivalent of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s on a document. A careful, meticulous dentist should remember to do them, both to give you your money’s worth and for the sake of your health.

5) If you are going in to see a cosmetic dentist, you should definitely ask for some “Before” and “After” photographs of the dentist’s patients. This is because the work of a cosmetic dentist is also a matter of taste as well as technique. The dentist might be very skilled, but if his or her tastes do not match yours, you are likely to come away dissatisfied. Actually, a tastelessly done procedure might be made worse if the dentist has a high level of technical skill, because you will have to live with the results for longer.

6) Take a long-term view when considering costs. It might be tempting to go after the procedure with the lowest cost, but think about how long the results will last. A very cheap procedure might only last for a little while, which means that you will soon have to shell out more money in order to get it done again. In the long run, a dentist who charges more but gives longer-lasting results might represent the more practical investment.
